Proloquo2Go vs LetMeTalk

The price gap is the whole reason this comparison exists, so start there. Proloquo2Go is $249.99 because it is a full communication system with a vocabulary designed from research into which words children need and where they should live on the screen, multiple grid sizes that grow with the child, voices recorded for children, and a company that has been updating it since 2009. LetMeTalk is free because it is a small donation-funded project that lets you line up ARASAAC picture symbols into a sentence and have the device read it out. Both are “AAC apps.” They are not the same product.

The thing the price does not tell you is maintenance. LetMeTalk's iPad app has not been updated since August 2018, and Google removed it from the Play Store in December 2021; the Android version now only exists as an APK on third-party download sites. That does not mean it stops working tomorrow, but it does mean nobody is fixing it when iOS changes, and a child's main way of communicating should not depend on an app nobody is maintaining.

Where LetMeTalk is genuinely stronger

• It costs nothing, which for a family waiting months on a funding decision is not a small thing.
• It works fully offline with no account, no login and no subscription to lapse.
• ARASAAC symbols are the standard set across much of Europe, so a child who uses them at school in Spain, Germany or Italy sees the same pictures at home.
• It is simple. A grandparent can understand the whole app in five minutes, which is not true of Proloquo2Go's settings.
• Android exists at all, even if only as a side-loaded file. Proloquo2Go has never had an Android version.

Where Proloquo2Go is stronger

• The vocabulary. Crescendo is organised around core words (the few hundred words that make up most of what anyone says), which is what lets a child build real sentences rather than pick from categories. This is the feature SLPs care about most and the one free apps rarely get right.
• It grows with the child, from a 4-button grid to a 144-button one, keeping words in the same place as the grid expands so motor memory carries over.
• Support and updates. Fifteen years of development, a support team, and an update this summer.
• Voices and languages, including children's voices, which matters when a six-year-old is speaking through it.
• Funding bodies know it. Insurers, school districts and AAC services fund it routinely, which is often easier than getting an unfamiliar app approved.

How to actually choose

1. 1Get an AAC assessment from a speech-language pathologist. They trial systems with your child rather than guess from a listing. Grid size, symbol set, vocabulary organisation and how your child physically accesses the screen all have to match, and none of those are visible in a comparison table.
2. 2Ask about funding at the same appointment. In many countries the app and the device are fundable. The SLP will know the local route, and which apps are easiest to get approved.
3. 3Use a free or trial app in the meantime, so your child has something now. Cboard, or a TD Snap, Avaz or Grid trial. Treat it as a stopgap, not a decision.
4. 4Do not choose on price alone. An abandoned AAC system costs more than any of these apps. The system that gets used is the one that fits the child.
