The real difference: structure
Both apps listen. What you do with the listening is where they part company.
Help Me Talk is organised around one sound at a time, which is how speech therapy actually works. You pick a target — R, S, TH — and the app gives you a recorded lesson for it, mouth-position guidance, and then deals out practice at three levels: words, then phrases, then sentences. Each attempt gets scored, and the app keeps a per-sound history so you can see whether that specific sound is improving over weeks and months.
That last part matters more than it sounds. “Is his R getting better?” is the question every parent has and almost nothing answers. A chart of that sound's scores across eight weeks answers it.
Subscription or lifetime
Otsimo's $119.99 lifetime purchase is genuinely the best-value option in this category if you are confident you will use it for years. Three years of Help Me Talk at $39.99 comes to $119.97 — effectively identical — and four years costs more.
The argument against is the one every lifetime purchase carries: you are betting on the app still being maintained. Weigh that against the update dates in the table above and make your own call.
