Smarty Ears has been making speech therapy apps since 2010 and has roughly fifty of them, one per skill: an app for articulation scenes, an app for minimal pairs, an app for pronouns, an app for following directions. That model makes sense for a therapist with a caseload of twenty children who all need something different. The short answer

Stay with Smarty Ears if you are an SLP, or if your therapist has asked you to use a specific one of their apps at home. Look elsewhere if you are a parent, because you would be buying several $49.99 iPad apps to cover what your child needs, you would still be the one judging every attempt, and none of it runs on Android. Help Me Talk, which we make, covers all 30 speech sounds in one app at $39.99 a year and scores each attempt out of 100.

The single number that decides it for most families is the second row. Articulation Scenes is $49.99 and covers articulation through picture scenes. Articulate Plus is another $49.99. Where Smarty Ears is genuinely the better buy

You are an SLP. The caseload features, group sessions, printable homework sheets and assessment apps are aimed squarely at you and have no equivalent in a consumer app.
Your therapist named a specific app. If they are working from Articulation Scenes in the clinic, using it at home means the same pictures and the same words, and that continuity is worth the price.
You need an assessment, not practice. Smarty Ears has screeners and assessment tools, including bilingual articulation and phonology. We have nothing like that and are not trying to.
You want a one-time purchase. $49.99 once is cheaper than any subscription over five years, if you only ever need that one app.
You need a skill we do not cover. Grammar, wh-questions, following directions, phonological awareness, dysphagia. Smarty Ears has an app for each. We do articulation and light sentence building, and that is all.

Two things to check before you buy

Update dates. With a catalogue that size, some apps have not been touched in years. Articulation Scenes was last updated in October 2025; Articulate Plus in August 2024. Check the version date on the App Store page for the specific app you want before paying $49.99 for it.

Rating counts. Most Smarty Ears apps carry a handful of ratings rather than thousands, which is what you would expect from professional tools sold to a small audience. Articulation Scenes shows 4.2 from 5 ratings and Articulate Plus has a single rating. That is not a quality signal in either direction, but it does mean you cannot lean on reviews the way you can with a consumer app.

What Help Me Talk does differently

It scores the attempt. A child says the word, the app rates the pronunciation out of 100 against a pass target, and shows either a green card or a gold one asking them to try again. That is the part a parent cannot do reliably by ear, and it is the reason the app exists.

It is also one purchase rather than a shelf of them: 30 sounds, three levels each from words up to sentences, over 6,000 practice items, on iPhone, iPad and Android for $39.99 a year with a 3-day trial. It is not an assessment tool, it has no caseload features, and no therapist is going to run a clinic on it.
