Where Speech Blubs is genuinely better

Three things, and they are not small.

• Video modelling. Real children on screen producing the target word, for your child to copy. Children imitate other children far more readily than they imitate adults, and no other app in this category does it at anything like the same production quality. For a two- or three-year-old, this is a genuine advantage.
• Scale and polish. A far larger activity library, themed sections, songs, and an amount of content that a small team simply cannot match. 52,000 ratings is also 52,000 families who found it worth reviewing.
• Age fit for the very young. Speech Blubs is comfortable with a two-year-old who is not talking yet. Help Me Talk's strongest feature — scoring what your child says — needs a child who can attempt a sound on request, which is usually around three.

The comparison

That last row deserves saying out loud rather than hiding: Speech Blubs has more than a thousand times as many ratings as we do. We are a small independent app. If a large, established user base is what makes you comfortable, that is a legitimate reason to stay.

The real difference: who decides if it was right

This is the thing that actually separates the two apps, and it is easy to miss on a feature list.

In most speech apps, including Speech Blubs, the child produces a word and an adult decides whether it was good enough. That works well when the adult is a speech-language pathologist. It works less well at half past seven on a Tuesday when you are not sure whether that R was actually better or whether you just wanted it to be.

Help Me Talk listens to the attempt and returns a score, then tracks that sound's scores across weeks and months. It turns “I think he's improving” into a line on a chart. That is the single feature most worth switching for — and the honest caveat is that automated scores move around with background noise and microphone distance, so the trend over weeks is the signal, not any one number.

Price, for a family that keeps going

Speech therapy is not a one-month project. At current prices, over two years Speech Blubs costs about $120 and Help Me Talk about $80 — and both are less than a single private therapy session in most places, which typically runs $100–250 in the US.

So price should probably not be the deciding factor unless the gap matters to your household. Fit should be. But if two apps are close on fit, the cheaper one is the cheaper one.
