The app says it cannot hear my child

Check the microphone permission first (Settings → Help Me Talk → Microphone on iPhone or iPad, or app permissions on Android). After that, the usual culprits are background noise and distance — hold the device about a hand’s width away, in a quiet room, and ask your child to say the word once rather than repeating it.

The score seems wrong

Automated pronunciation scores move around with background noise and microphone distance, so a single number is not worth much. The trend across a week or two is the part that means something, and that is what the progress screen is built around. If scoring is unavailable — no connection, for instance — the app still records and still lets your child practise, it just cannot show a number.

I paid but the app still says locked

Tap Restore Purchases in the grown-ups area. That is also how you unlock a second device signed in to the same Apple ID. A subscription bought on iPhone or iPad does not carry over to Android — those are separate stores and separate purchases.

How do I cancel?

Through the store, not through us. On iPhone or iPad: manage subscriptions. On Android: Google Play → profile → Payments & subscriptions. You keep access until the end of the period you have already paid for. Full detail is in the app terms.

Which sound should we work on?

If a speech-language pathologist named one, use that. Otherwise go by age rather than by how wrong it sounds — every sound page lists the age most children master it, and this guide covers how to run a five-minute session.

Deleting your data

There is no account, and practice history is stored on the device — so deleting the app deletes it. Voice recordings are not retained at all. The full detail is in the app privacy policy.

Reporting a problem with the content

If a word list, an age range or anything in the guides looks wrong, please tell us. Everything on this site is checked against a source, and we would rather fix an error than defend it.

Help Me Talk is a practice app, not a diagnosis or a replacement for a licensed speech-language pathologist. If you are worried about your child’s speech, talk to your doctor or an SLP — this app is for the practice in between.
