Speech therapy apps for adults, and which one fits which problem

We make a speech app for children, so start with the useful bit: Help Me Talk is not on this list and should not be. Adult speech therapy after a stroke, a brain injury or a Parkinson's diagnosis is a different clinical problem from a five-year-old who says "wabbit", and the apps that treat it were built by different people for different reasons. This page names the ones adults and their SLPs actually use, with prices checked on 9 September 2026, so you do not waste a month on the wrong category.

The short answer

For aphasia after a stroke, the three names that matter are Constant Therapy ($29.99 a month after a two-week trial, adapts task difficulty as you go), the Tactus Therapy apps ($19.99 to $89.99 each, bought once, free Lite versions of every one), and Lingraphica's TalkPath Therapy (free, over 13,500 exercises). For apraxia of speech in an adult, Tactus Apraxia Therapy at $29.99. For dysarthria, the app matters less than the exercises, which our dysarthria page covers.

The three that clinicians name first

Constant Therapy and Tactus are the two most researched names in adult neurorehabilitation apps, and they answer the same need in opposite ways. Constant Therapy is a subscription that picks the next task for you and moves the difficulty as your accuracy changes, which suits someone practising alone and unsure what to do next. Tactus sells single-purpose apps you buy once and keep, which suits someone whose SLP has told them precisely which skill to drill.

TalkPath is the one to try before either, because it costs nothing and its exercise bank is large enough to fill months of daily practice. It does not adapt, and it does not hand you a plan.

Which app for which diagnosis

ProblemWhat it looks likeWhere to start
AphasiaWords are there but will not come out, or come out wrong. Reading and writing often affected too.Tactus Language Therapy 4-in-1 ($89.99) or Constant Therapy. TalkPath free first.
Apraxia of speechYou know the word and your mouth will not shape it. Groping, inconsistent errors.Tactus Apraxia Therapy ($29.99), which cues syllable by syllable with video.
DysarthriaSlurred, quiet or slow speech from weak or poorly controlled muscles.Exercises and loudness work over apps. See our dysarthria page.
Cognitive-communication after brain injurySpeech is intact, but attention, memory and organisation are not.Constant Therapy, which mixes cognitive tasks into the same programme.
Voice problemsHoarseness, pitch, volume, or voice after Parkinson's.None of the above. This needs a voice-specialist SLP, often an LSVT LOUD programme.

What an app cannot do for an adult

None of these diagnose, and none replace a speech-language pathologist. What they add is repetition, which is the ingredient adult rehabilitation is always short of: a weekly session gives you an hour, and recovery responds to daily practice. One study of Tactus apps found meaningful gains in chronic aphasia from twenty minutes a day over four weeks, which is roughly the dose an app can deliver and a clinic cannot.

The other honest limit is that recovery after stroke is slow and uneven, and an app that shows a rising accuracy graph can flatter a week that was actually flat. Use the numbers to keep going, not to judge.

Paying for it

  • Medicare and most insurers fund adult speech therapy after a stroke or injury, and some fund Lingraphica's devices and software. Apps you buy yourself usually are not covered.
  • Start free. TalkPath and the Tactus Lite versions let you spend a fortnight finding out which app you will actually open before you pay for one.
  • One-time beats subscription for a long haul. If you expect to practise for years, a $89.99 Tactus bundle costs less than four months of Constant Therapy.
  • Ask the SLP first. They may already have a licence, a preferred app, or a home programme that makes the question moot.

Where Help Me Talk fits, which is not here

Help Me Talk is a children's articulation app. It has 30 sound lessons, over 6,000 practice words, phrases and sentences, and it scores each attempt out of 100 so a child can hear how close they got. The pictures are cartoon animals and the rewards are stars. An adult relearning to name objects after a stroke needs adult vocabulary, adult tasks and adult dignity, and none of that is what we built.

The one exception worth naming: if you are an adult with a lifelong articulation difference, a lisp or an R distortion that never resolved, the mechanics are the same at any age and a children's app is only wrong about its packaging. Our how to fix a lisp guide applies to adults as written.

Help Me Talk is a practice app, not a diagnosis or a replacement for a licensed speech-language pathologist. If you are worried about your child’s speech, talk to your doctor or an SLP. This app is for the practice in between.

Questions parents ask

What is the best speech therapy app for adults?
For aphasia after a stroke, Constant Therapy at $29.99 a month is the most complete single subscription, and Lingraphica's TalkPath Therapy is the best free option. If your SLP has named one skill to work on, buy the matching Tactus Therapy app once instead of subscribing.
Are there free speech therapy apps for adults?
Yes. Lingraphica's TalkPath Therapy is free with over 13,500 exercises, and every Tactus Therapy app has a free Lite version with a sample of its content. Constant Therapy gives two weeks free before charging.
Do speech therapy apps work for aphasia?
They help, as practice between sessions. Research on the Tactus apps found meaningful improvement in chronic aphasia from about twenty minutes a day over four weeks. They do not diagnose, they do not set the goals, and they work best alongside a speech-language pathologist rather than instead of one.
Does insurance cover speech therapy apps for adults?
Therapy sessions are usually covered by Medicare and private insurance after a stroke or injury. Consumer apps you buy yourself generally are not, though Lingraphica's clinical devices and software can qualify. Ask before you assume either way.
Can adults use a children's speech app?
For articulation, the mechanics are identical at any age, so the drills transfer. The content does not: cartoon animals and star rewards are aimed at a five-year-old. For anything caused by a stroke or brain injury, use an adult app, because the problem is language, not pronunciation.
What app helps with speech after a stroke?
Constant Therapy for a guided daily programme, Tactus Language Therapy 4-in-1 for naming, comprehension, reading and writing, and TalkPath Therapy free for volume. Which of the three fits depends on whether your difficulty is finding words, understanding them, or producing them.
