How much does Proloquo2Go cost for a child?

AssistiveWare sells three communication apps and they are priced very differently. Prices were read from the live US App Store listings on 15 August 2026; other storefronts vary, and your own store shows your price.

Why it costs that much, and when it is genuinely worth it

$249.99 is startling next to every other app on a tablet. The comparison that makes it make sense is a dedicated speech-generating device, which runs into thousands.

For a child who cannot speak, this is how they ask for food, say they are in pain, argue with a sibling and answer a teacher, every day, for years. Proloquo2Go is the category standard for that job. It has been on the App Store since 2009 and holds 4.8 stars from over 12,000 US ratings, which is a rating base almost nothing else in AAC has. Spread across the years a child will use it, the price stops looking like the main issue.

The one situation where $249.99 is bad value is the common one: buying it for a child who does not need AAC at all.

Can insurance or funding cover it?

Often, and far more often than families realise. It is almost never automatic, though, and almost never granted after the fact. Ask before you buy.

In many countries an AAC app, and the tablet to run it, can be funded through health services, insurance, education budgets or disability schemes. A speech-language pathologist who does AAC assessments will know the local route, which is a much better use of an appointment than asking them to name their favourite app.

• Ask before purchasing. Funders generally will not reimburse an app a family already bought, so a receipt is not a claim.
• Ask about the device too. The iPad is frequently fundable alongside the app, and it is the larger cost.
• Ask what evidence they need. Funding usually requires a professional's assessment and recommendation, which takes time to arrange, so start it early.
• Ask the school. Where a communication system is needed for a child to access education, the education budget rather than the family is often the right payer.

When a much cheaper app is the right answer

One split decides this, and it is worth being honest with yourself about which side your child is on.

If your child has no reliable way to tell you what they need, they need AAC, and cheaper practice apps (ours included) are not a substitute at any price. Spend the money, or get it funded.

If your child talks but is hard to understand, Proloquo2Go solves a problem they do not have.
