Why there is no trial, and why that is not as bad as it sounds

AssistiveWare sells Proloquo2Go as a one-time purchase, and Apple's App Store has no mechanism for a free trial of a paid, non-subscription app. Its newer app, Proloquo (without the “2Go”), is a subscription product that downloads free and unlocks with a plan, which is the closer thing to “try before you buy” from the same company, though it is a different, simpler app.

The better answer to “can I try it first?” is not a download at all. An AAC assessment with a speech-language pathologist normally includes trialling systems with your child on the clinic's own devices. That is how the decision is supposed to be made, and it costs you nothing beyond the appointment. Choosing an AAC app from a store listing, or from a trial week at home, is how systems get abandoned.

Four legitimate ways to pay less, or nothing

1. 1Ask about funding before you buy. In the US, Medicaid and many private insurers fund AAC as durable medical equipment when an SLP writes the evaluation; school districts buy it for students with it in their IEP. In the UK, NHS and local-authority AAC services supply devices and apps. In Australia, the NDIS funds AAC. Families routinely pay $249.99 for something that would have been covered, because nobody told them to ask.
2. 2Ask the school about Apple's education discount. Schools buying 20 or more copies of a participating app through Apple School Manager get 50% off. If your child's school is buying AAC for several students, Proloquo2Go at half price is a question worth putting to the technology coordinator.
3. 3Buy once, use on every device on the Apple ID. It is a one-time purchase, not per device. An iPad for school and an iPhone for the car is one payment, and Family Sharing can extend it further.
4. 4Wait for a sale, carefully. AssistiveWare has run discounts around AAC Awareness Month in October in some years. It is not reliable enough to delay a child's communication for, but if the assessment is still weeks away, it is worth a glance.

AAC apps that genuinely are free

If your child needs a way to communicate now and the money is not there yet, these are the honest options. All checked on the US App Store and Google Play on 6 September 2026.

• Cboard. Free and open source, from a non-profit. Runs in a browser on anything, with an Android app on Google Play and a community-built iOS app. Symbol-based, works offline in Chrome, no subscription. The most credible free AAC there is, with the caveat that the interface is plainer than the paid systems.
• Weave Chat AAC. Free on the App Store, rated 4.7 from about 500 US ratings, and actively updated. A newer app with a growing following among SLPs.
• LetMeTalk. Free and donation-funded, with over 9,000 ARASAAC symbols, and it works offline. The honest caveat: its iPad app was last updated in 2018 and it was removed from Google Play in December 2021, so it only exists as a side-loaded Android file now. It still works for some families; it is not being maintained. Proloquo2Go vs LetMeTalk goes through it properly.
• Free trials of paid systems. TD Snap gives a month free on iPad before its $9.99-a-month speaking upgrade. Grid for iPad has a 30-day trial before $10.99 a month or $349 once. Avaz gives 14 days free with no card, then $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year. Any of these will show you what a full system feels like while the funding question is answered.

Where Help Me Talk fits, and where it does not

We make Help Me Talk, and it is not a free Proloquo2Go. It is a speech practice app for children who can talk but are hard to understand: 30 guided sound lessons, over 6,000 practice words, phrases and sentences, and it listens to each attempt and scores it. It includes picture boards for building a short sentence and naming feelings, which is light picture communication, not a full AAC system.

So if your child cannot tell you they are hungry, nothing on this page except the AAC apps above is relevant, and the assessment is the next step.
